Conversion of Stone Byre

This project involved working with an existing, half collapsed stone byre on the Isle of Eigg, in the Inner Hebrides. The project brief was to develop a design for a self-contained 1 bedroom residential holiday let, within the remains of the byre in this dramatic setting.

Our proposals involved building on the byre, using a timber framed structure. Internally, it was necessary to be highly efficient in terms of floor area. The result was an open-plan multi-use living space, with sleeping accommodation provided on a raised deck. Externally, the design was a contemporary interpretation of typical local buildings, retaining the dry stone wall, and clad in timber.

Unfortunately the scheme did not move further forward due to planning constraints.

Client- “Carve Architecture have worked for me on a number of projects. Each time they accurately interpreted the brief, responded promptly with excellent design concepts and were open to changes and suggestions. They handled the (often sensitive) relationship with the local planning departments extremely well and used creativity and skill to come up with workable solutions to the unexpected. Tim and Kate are professional, approachable, responsive and talented. I don’t hesitate in recommending them.”
